What We Do

At The Blacksmith Institute, we believe meaningful change starts with culture, connection, and a clear understanding of the people being served. Our work recognizes that individuals and organizations cannot be separated from the histories, relationships, environments, and systems that shape their experiences.

We partner with organizations to look beneath the surface of a challenge—listening to the people most affected, examining the systems around them, and developing approaches that are culturally grounded, practical, and specific to those being served.

Through research and evaluation, consultation and strategy, training, facilitation, and speaking, we help organizations move from good intentions to work that people can recognize themselves in.

The background features a window with plants on the sill, a hanging plant, a wall hanging with vibrant designs, and decorative ceramic plates on the wall, with a wooden shelving unit holding more potted plants and books.

Research & Evaluation Services

Our research is culturally grounded, community-informed, and designed to serve the people whose knowledge makes it possible. We offer needs assessments, program evaluation, qualitative research, and data analysis to help organizations understand their work and make informed decisions.

We also partner with Tribal communities and organizations on scholarly research that documents lived experience, preserves cultural and intergenerational knowledge, and contributes perspectives often absent from the academic record. Research questions and methods are developed with attention to how knowledge is gathered, protected, interpreted, and shared.

Consultation & Strategy

We work alongside organizations facing complex challenges, developing new initiatives, or seeking to better serve their people. Our approach looks beneath the immediate concern to understand the relationships, history, culture, and systems influencing what is happening.

Drawing from experience in behavioral health, nonprofit leadership, Tribal policy, education, and public systems, we help identify gaps and develop practical strategies grounded in the organization’s actual environment. Areas of consultation may include leadership, organizational culture, program development, culturally responsive services, Tribal and community engagement, behavioral health systems, and policy.

Training, Facilitation & Speaking

We provide keynote presentations, workshops, facilitated discussions, and staff and leadership training shaped for each audience. A central area of our work is supporting organizations that serve communities whose ways of knowing, healing, and relating differ from Western models. We help them examine where Western assumptions shape their work and train the people chosen to carry cultural knowledge and practices forward in ways that honor where they come from and the people they are intended to serve.

Additional topics include identity and belonging, authenticity, leadership, code-switching, microaggressions, culturally responsive practice, trauma-informed care, emotional wellness, and burnout prevention.
